Reading a Bend Profile in Four Response Bands
One letter near the tip is asked to summarise an entire stiffness curve. Here is the curve, divided the way our deflection rig divides it.
A golf shaft is not uniformly stiff. It resists bending by different amounts at different points along its length, and that variation is the whole story. Plot resistance against position and you get a curve; that curve is the bend profile, and it explains almost everything about how a shaft behaves that a flex letter cannot.
Two shafts can arrive at identical overall stiffness by opposite routes. One might be rigid near the grip and compliant near the head; the other uniform end to end. Clamp both, count the oscillations, and you may well get the same number. Hit them, and they produce different ball flights, different feel and different delivered loft. The single number hid the difference.
Why We Use Four Bands and Not Three or Ten
You can take deflection readings at as many points as you have patience for. More stations produce a smoother curve and, past a certain density, no additional decisions. We settled on four because four is where the readings stop merging into each other and start mapping cleanly onto distinct things a golfer reports feeling.
Each band gets loaded and measured at a fixed station on the rig, always the same distances, always the same load. The absolute figures matter less than the shape they trace, because the shape is what survives comparison between manufacturers.

Band One: the Butt Section
This is the part your hands are wrapped around, and it is the part you have the most direct opinion about. A stiff butt resists the first move down and reads as control to some players and as a plank to others. A softer butt loads early and gives the sensation of the club "kicking in" at the start of the downswing.
Almost none of this shows up in the ball flight. It is nearly pure feel, which is not a criticism — feel decides whether a golfer trusts a club, and a club you do not trust gets swung badly. We treat butt section as a preference to satisfy rather than a performance variable to optimise, and we say so openly.
Band Two: the Upper Mid
Where the butt is feel and the tip is flight, the upper mid is timing. It governs how quickly load accumulates once the transition begins, and it is the band most sensitive to how abrupt a golfer's change of direction is.
A player with a violent transition and a soft upper mid ends up with a club that loads faster than they can use, which shows up as inconsistency rather than as any specific miss. Firming this band gives that player something to push against. A smooth, gradual transition wants the opposite, and stiffening it simply removes sensation without adding anything.
Band Three: the Lower Mid
The least discussed band and, in our experience, the one most often responsible for a shaft that "nearly" works. It controls recovery timing — when the stored bend comes back and pushes the head forward toward the ball.
Get this wrong and the golfer reports that the club is fine on good swings and unpredictable on average ones. That is exactly the signature of a recovery mismatch: when the tempo is perfect the timing lines up, and when it is not, the head arrives early or late by an amount that changes shot to shot.
If a fitting has produced a club that works beautifully one day in three, the lower mid is the first place we look. It is a timing problem masquerading as a consistency problem.
Band Four: the Tip
The band that pays. Everything the golf ball experiences from the shaft comes through the last several inches of it, because that is what dictates how far ahead of your hands the head has travelled at the moment of contact.
A soft tip lets the head get further forward, points the face higher, adds delivered loft and adds spin. A firm tip restrains all of it. The magnitude is larger than most golfers expect: switching between two shafts at opposite ends of the tip-stiffness range can move presented loft by two or three degrees, which is most of what an adjustable hosel offers across its whole span.
It is also the band that tip trimming attacks directly, which is why a trim decision cannot be separated from a profile decision. Cutting an inch off the tip does not shorten the shaft in any meaningful sense — it deletes the softest portion of the beam and moves the stiff part closer to the head.
What the Shape Tells Us That the Letter Cannot
Three shapes come up repeatedly and they are worth naming, because once you can see them on a chart the flex letter becomes an irrelevance.
- Front-loaded. Stiff at the butt, progressively softer toward the tip. Feels controlled in the hands, launches higher than the letter suggests, and suits a golfer who wants stability early and help late.
- Tip-braced. Softer at the butt, firm through the last third. Loads noticeably, then refuses to add loft at the end. The classic choice for a strong player who spins the ball too much.
- Even. A near-straight line. Predictable, unremarkable, and frequently the right answer for a golfer whose problem is repeatability rather than launch.
Two of those three can carry the same letter from two different manufacturers. We have measured pairs stamped identically that came out more than a full flex step apart once cut and assembled, which is the single strongest argument we know for profiling before purchasing.
How This Runs in an Actual Session
Candidate shafts get pulled off the rack by profile shape and weight before a ball is struck. That typically reduces a rack of sixty-odd models to three or four genuinely different options. Those get hit, outdoors, on the doppler, and the launch numbers separate them.
The reason we sort first is fatigue. A golfer hitting a dozen shafts is a different golfer by the eighth, and the data from the back half of that session is worthless. Three candidates chosen for good reasons produce a cleaner answer than twelve chosen at random ever will.
Bring your current shaft. Profiling what you already play is the most useful fifteen minutes of the session, because the target is always defined relative to what your hands are used to rather than in the abstract.
