Three Degrees on the Sole, Something Else at Contact
The delivered-loft problem does not disappear when the club gets short. It just gets small enough that nobody bothers to measure it, which is exactly why so many putters roll badly. Sixty minutes, indoor station.
Shaft Lean Rewrites the Loft Before the Ball Knows
Putters are built with a small amount of loft so the ball lifts out of its own resting depression instead of being driven into it. Three degrees is the usual figure. Very few golfers deliver three degrees, because the hands arrive ahead of or behind the ball and every degree of lean subtracts from or adds to what the face presents.
A player with four degrees of forward lean is delivering a putter with negative loft. The ball gets pressed down, skids, bounces, and takes a third of its journey to start rolling. The fix is not a different stroke. It is a putter built with enough loft that the delivery you already own produces a clean start.

Length and Lie Decide Where Your Eyes Go
A putter that is too long forces the hands in toward the body and the eyes inside the ball, which makes the target line look further right than it is. The player compensates by aiming left, and after a while that compensation stops being conscious and starts being a stroke.
Getting the length and lie right removes the compensation instead of drilling it. We set eye position over the line first, then correct lie so the sole sits flat at that position, and only then look at what the stroke is doing. Fitting the stroke before the geometry is fitting a symptom.
Almost nobody needs the thirty-five inches sold on the rack. The most common change we make is taking three-quarters of an inch off and correcting the head weight afterward, and it is the change golfers notice fastest.

Toe Hang Is a Setting, Not a Style
Hang the putter by its shaft and see where the toe points. Straight down is face balanced, and it resists rotation. Toe hanging low means the head wants to rotate through the stroke. Neither is better; they suit different amounts of face rotation, and the amount you produce is measurable in about six putts.
What goes wrong is that golfers choose by head shape. A mallet is bought because mallets are forgiving and a blade is bought because blades look right, and the balance characteristic that came with the purchase then fights the stroke every single time. We measure the rotation first and treat head shape as a preference to satisfy afterward.
If the face is rotating eight degrees through impact and the putter is face balanced, the golfer is holding the head shut by hand on every stroke. That works on a good day and disappears under pressure.
Green Speed Here Changes the Weight Answer
Desert courses run their greens quick for most of the year, and quick greens want a different head mass than the slow, shaggy surfaces a stock putter is designed around. Heavier heads suit slow greens because they carry the ball with a shorter stroke. On fast ones they overrun, and the golfer starts decelerating to compensate.
We test at least two head weights on a surface set to roll the way local greens actually roll in season, and we ask where you play in winter. A snowbird who spends half the year on slower greens somewhere else has a genuinely different problem, and counterweighting solves it better than owning two putters does.
Alignment Belongs in the Fitting
A sightline that suits one golfer's eye actively misleads another. Some players aim well with a single thin line, some need two rails, and a handful aim best with no line at all because the line invites them to fiddle. This is not a decoration question and we treat it as a fitting input.
The station shows you where you are actually aimed rather than where you believe you are aimed. Most golfers are surprised, and roughly half of the surprise is fixable by changing the head's alignment treatment rather than the stroke.
Bring the putter you have and the one in the garage. Old putters are useful evidence. If you putted well with something for three seasons and then replaced it, the spec that was working is worth recovering, and we can usually find it in ten minutes on the bench.
